A Message of Gratitude: Mary’s Story
The Little Girl Who Became a Nurse
In 2008, a four-year-old girl arrived at Lusungu Children's Home in Chingola, Zambia.
Like many of the children who come through our gates, Mary needed more than food and shelter. She needed a family. She needed stability. She needed hope.
Most of all, she needed someone to believe in her future.
At Lusungu, she found exactly that.
What began as a safe place to live would become the foundation for an entirely new life.
A Place to Belong
For Mary, Lusungu Children's Home became more than a home—it became a community of people who loved her, encouraged her, and invested in her future.
She received the essentials every child deserves: nutritious meals, clothing, education, and a safe place to sleep. But she also received something equally important—people who cared deeply about her well-being and her potential.
Mama and Papa Ng'ambi, caregivers, teachers, sponsors, and supporters walked alongside her throughout her childhood.
When Mary needed school fees, they were provided.
When she needed encouragement, someone was there.
When she needed a place to belong, Lusungu became her family.
Years later, Mary would reflect on that impact:
"They gave me shelter when I had nowhere to go. They gave me food and clothes when I had no one to help. I am forever grateful."
The Gift of Education
Education became one of the greatest gifts Mary received.
Through the generosity of sponsors and supporters, her school fees were paid year after year. She progressed through primary school, secondary school, and eventually into tertiary education.
Each school term represented another step toward a brighter future.
Each sponsor who gave faithfully helped make that journey possible.
For many vulnerable children, education is often interrupted by poverty, family instability, or lack of resources. Mary's story could have followed that path.
Instead, because people invested in her future, she was given the opportunity to continue learning, growing, and pursuing her dreams.
Answering a Calling
As Mary grew older, she discovered a passion for caring for others.
That passion led her into nursing.
The same young girl who once depended on others for care began preparing for a profession centered on serving and caring for those in need.
After years of dedication, study, and training, Mary achieved a remarkable milestone.
Today, she is a nurse.
Her journey is a testimony not only to her perseverance and determination, but also to what becomes possible when vulnerable children are given consistent support over many years.
"I am called a nurse today because of your support, love, and care," Mary shared in a recent letter to her sponsors.
A Story of Transformation
Mary's story reminds us that sponsorship is about far more than meeting immediate needs.
It is about creating opportunities.
It is about opening doors.
It is about helping children discover the future God has prepared for them.
When Mary arrived at Lusungu at four years old, no one could have predicted all that lay ahead.
Today she is educated, employed, and equipped to serve her community through her work in healthcare.
The little girl who once needed care now provides care to others.
Thank You for Making Stories Like Mary's Possible
In a heartfelt letter to her sponsors, Mary wrote:
"I am thankful for you sponsoring me throughout my education since 2008. I am forever grateful for the love and care Mercy Kids showed me. Your kindness and dedication have had a significant impact on my life, and I will always remember your valuable assistance."
Mary's journey is a powerful reminder that long-term investment changes lives.
A sponsorship.
A school uniform.
A tuition payment.
A meal.
A prayer.
A caring mentor.
Over time, these simple acts become something extraordinary.
They become a nurse.
They become a future.
They become a story of hope.
And because faithful supporters chose to invest in one little girl many years ago, Mary is now impacting countless lives through her compassion and care.
That is the power of sponsorship.
That is the power of hope.
That is the mission of Mercy Kids Africa.
