Field Notes: A Gift I’ll Always Cherish

Written by Keila Lawrence

When our group arrived at the Lusungu Children’s Home this past October, it was well past 11 p.m., yet we were met with an overflow of joy—smiling faces, lively music, and a warmth that made me feel instantly at home.

In the midst of it all, a small girl in a bright pink dress appeared and clung to my leg, grinning up at me.

“We’re going to be best friends,” she announced. I laughed and replied, “I’d be honored! But first, what’s your name?” She smiled wider. “Hellen,” she said—and Hellen truly meant every word. She stayed by my side nearly the entire time.

Just a few days later, Hellen came running up to me with her hands hidden behind her back, then proudly held out a picture she’d colored of a dog, carefully crafted just for me. The precision in her coloring, each crayon stroke nearly perfect, moved me deeply. This picture wasn’t a grand masterpiece, yet to me, it was. I treasure it still, and have it hanging on my bedroom wall as a reminder of her kindness.

Through Hellen’s small but powerful act of generosity, I came home determined to live more selflessly. If Hellen could give so much of herself with such joy, I could, too.

I hope you’ll consider joining me in this spirit of generosity and think of the many children like Hellen whose lives are made brighter by Mercy Kids Africa. A gift of any size can make a world of difference.
